A New Generation of Malø Yachts: The M49

The Malö Yachts 49 looks a lot more modern than previous models

It looks as if the 21st century has arrived on the island of Orust, Sweden. Among the proud boatbuilders on the island, who can trace their boatbuilding roots back to the middle ages, a slow and careful development in design and build has always been a trademark. This has earned them an unrivalled reputation as one of the best boatbuilders in the world. Building proper boats that never really goes out of fashion.

As time and markets move on, traditional boatbuilders must move with them. The result is clear for all sailing fans around the world who have witnessed the evolution of the typical Orust built yacht since the 1960s. Almost all the yards have adapted modern design, yet interpreted them in their own way. The market, and some development in yacht design of course, have resulted in wider beams, higher form stability, longer waterlines and plum bows.

Others have very sound arguments for not following this trend and it surely has its merits to have a narrow and lightly driven hull in some waters. A overhang in the bow is often easier to step ashore from. The good thing is that there is almost a perfect yacht being built by someone somewhere.

Anyway, Malö Yachts, which is now part of Sweden Yachts Group, a newly formed company that consists of Sweden Yachts, Malö Yachts, CR Yachts and Regina of Vindö Yachts, are presenting an exiting new model, The Malø Yachts 49.

Length overall is 16 meters, and a waterline of 13.20 meter and a beam of 4,47 meter. Draught will be 2,35 meters with what appears to be an optional shallow draft version with a draught of only 2 meters. Of the total of 16000 kilos displacement, 6000 kilos is ballast weight. Powered by a 80HP Yanmar diesel engine and giant tanks this is your turn key Bluewater Cruiser right there.

We look forward to follow this and what seems as a great starting point for a new range of Malö Yachts.

The company writes in a press release:

"The Malö Yachts 49 will offer everything you would expect from a Malö and more. A true long-distance sailing yacht which is extremely comfortable with increased performance and stability due to new elements in the design. The new hull shape and high ballast ratio keel, makes for increased stability at all points of sailing, and the deeper bow sections provide more comfort when sailing upwind in a heavy sea.

The hull and stern are slightly wider than on earlier models providing more cabin and deck space. Above deck offers a large cockpit equipped with a targa arch and simplified rigging system with all lines leading back to the cockpit, this enables easy single-handed sailing or alternatively plenty of room for a large crew.

Below deck, the broader hull offers plenty of living space and is fitted out for both comfort and functionality. Increased natural light from extra hatches in the deck enhances the feeling of spaciousness. The extra width also provides space for a technical installations room to house a generator, water maker, and other equipment, along with the space for a potential dinghy garage and/or integrated gangway in the stern. Several different layoutsare available, although the yacht can also be built to a customer’s own specifications.

The M49 will remain true to Malö’s heritage with its classic style, superb build quality and of course its excellent bluewater cruising characteristics; a yacht that will take you around the world both comfortably and safely. It is certain to please even the most discerning of sailors."
